Executive delivery, fast-track.....for CIPS full members

.... and now for CILT members too

Watch what students and tutors are saying about the programme:

Are you a full member of CIPS or CILT? This could be your natural next step.  This delivery mode gives you generous exemptions towards your Masters degree (it is possible to complete in as little as 12 months if you have full membership and suitable experience)

The MSc is exactly the same level as either an MA - Master of Arts - or an MBA.  And you will probably find that the 12 months of study count as a full year's CPD points for your professional institute

  • Full UK university Masters degree

  • Exclusively for CIPS and CILT full members

  • Two taught weekends at Moor Hall near Heathrow

  • 1200 students enrolled or graduated so far with MDC on all streams of the MSc

  • Truly international - around 20% of delegates fly in from overseas for the two residential weekends

  • Top Procurement academics

  • Next intake April 2013

Update -

The 23rd procurement group started at Moor Hall in Oct '12 - with 17 delegates

.

"Didn't even notice the rain, felt so proud and happy!!!  ..... Janet Benton one of the first graduates encouraging some of her colleagues who haven't been quite as quick to finish as she has managed.

"Thought I should drop you a note now that the MSc is over! .... I really enjoyed the course and on reflection, I can't believe how quickly the last year has gone. Hopefully the three colleagues that I recommended the course to will meet the standard of achieving a distinction too! (Just a shame that your new £20 Amazon voucher offer per new enrolment didn't exist when I recommended the course to the three of them!) ..... When I needed to contact MDC for things, queries were handled promptly and staff were very helpful. ...... I know you used a quote from me in your last newsletter, and if you need to use someone as a case study in future, feel free to get in touch." ....... Marcus Bailey, Lloyds TSB (graduated Jul 03)

Mode of teaching and Learning:

Please note this is not a distance learning programme, and you must attend the two weekend modules near Heathrow airport.  The programme is delivered via what is known as the 'executive' model.  This allows busy executives to attend limited, intensive face-to-face sessions with much of the learning taking place between and after those face-to-face sessions.  It is vital that participants have daily access to the Web and email.  Much of the group learning takes place in the virtual community created and maintained via the Webucate system.  For more information about this student support system click here.

Quality teaching in procurement and supply management

Glamorgan have been rated as one of the top Business Schools for teaching quality.  A report by the Times Higher Education Supplement puts Glamorgan up there alongside Warwick and Cranfield and London Business School.

....and from the university's website:

Research inspired purchasing & supply activity permeates through to the School’s quality of teaching. The Glamorgan Business School is the largest Business School in Wales, 16th largest in the UK and is among only 20 UK Business Schools to have received Excellent ratings from the Government's Teaching Quality Assessment body. The Times Good University Guide 2001 names the School in the top five in the country for Business Studies.

The outstanding reputation of our Business School is based on our three consecutive ‘excellent’ ratings in the national assessments of teaching quality, which have contributed to the Daily Telegraph classification of the University of Glamorgan as a ‘first division university’. The University was categorised as being in the top six UK Universities in the field of purchasing and supply chain management. The University is also a CIPS approved centre.

MSc Procurement - Course rationale

(Extracts from University of Glamorgan website.  Please note that in 1998 the aims of the programme were predominantly regional, but the success of the course has led to the University offering the same programme to a national and international audience and it now includes e-procurement modules)

Purchasing and supply is a growth area both in terms of academic study, research output and consultancy. ....There is a particular need to support and contribute to the economic success of SMEs through applied purchasing and supply research and the development of flexible education, training and development opportunities. There is also a need to understand the forces of globalisation that are impacting on employers internationally, nationally and regionally.

Research within the Business School focuses on SME purchasing strategies. The need for strategic purchasing is naturally endorsed by those within the function but seldom espoused with any real sincerity by others. An opportunity for competitive advantage is being missed. An academic discipline in purchasing must therefore provide the practitioner with quantitative data as well as conceptual food for thought. This data must be in the form of practical tools and techniques, contained within a framework of concepts and principles. Purchasing can be seen as a resource management function. External resources are just as important as internal resources. Management of external resources is intrinsically strategic. Strategy is usually formulated to gain competitive advantage at some point in the value chain. If purchasing is to be seen as a strategic subject, then clearly the study and development of purchasing strategies needs to be undertaken. As a subject, within the discipline, inter-organisational relationships overlap purchasing strategy, but have interesting linkages with technology issues - technology management, innovation, information systems and e-commerce. The overall aim of purchasing and supply research activity within the school is to work together, with both large purchasers and SME suppliers, to contribute to local economic development and provide everyone in the supply chain with an opportunity for competitive advantage.

Staff involved in applied purchasing and supply research are currently working closely with the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) on projects focusing on developing SME purchasing strategies.

Examples of funding include:

  • 1997/98 development in SMEs. Business Link Suffolk. £30,000.
  • 1998 Supplier development and supply chain Management Attitude survey. Business Link Suffolk. £15,000.
  • 1998/99 Strategy usage in SMEs: Creating World Class Suppliers, Suffolk TEC. £40,000.

The University of Glamorgan Bosch Chair in Purchasing & Supply became operational on 30th November 1998, with a mission to promote and deliver purchasing and supply management, and education and training to meet the needs of .... employers, employees and other individuals. A prime aim of the Chair is to secure a specialist research base related to understanding and responding to the needs of small and medium size organisations......

To meet this need a research unit has been established at the University of Glamorgan Business School. ......The unit's mission is to support and contribute to the economic success of small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) .... through applied purchasing & supply research and the development of flexible education, training and development opportunities. The research unit aims to:

  • Be recognised as a research resource of international standing for the delivery of relevant and useful research to support and contribute to the economic success of ..... SMEs.
