Mode of teaching and Learning:Please note this is not a distance learning programme, and you must attend the two weekend modules near Heathrow airport. The programme is delivered via what is known as the 'executive' model. This allows busy executives to attend limited, intensive face-to-face sessions with much of the learning taking place between and after those face-to-face sessions. It is vital that participants have daily access to the Web and email. Much of the group learning takes place in the virtual community created and maintained via the Webucate system. Purchasing and supply is a growth area both in terms of academic study, research output and consultancy. ....There is a particular need to support and contribute to the economic success of SMEs through applied purchasing and supply research and the development of flexible education, training and development opportunities. There is also a need to understand the forces of globalisation that are impacting on employers internationally, nationally and regionally.
Research within the Business School focuses on SME purchasing strategies. The need for strategic purchasing is naturally endorsed by those within the function but seldom espoused with any real sincerity by others. An opportunity for competitive advantage is being missed. An academic discipline in purchasing must therefore provide the practitioner with quantitative data as well as conceptual food for thought. This data must be in the form of practical tools and techniques, contained within a framework of concepts and principles. Purchasing can be seen as a resource management function. External resources are just as important as internal resources. Management of external resources is intrinsically strategic. Strategy is usually formulated to gain competitive advantage at some point in the value chain. If purchasing is to be seen as a strategic subject, then clearly the study and development of purchasing strategies needs to be undertaken. As a subject, within the discipline, inter-organisational relationships overlap purchasing strategy, but have interesting linkages with technology issues - technology management, innovation, information systems and e-commerce. The overall aim of purchasing and supply research activity within the school is to work together, with both large purchasers and SME suppliers, to contribute to local economic development and provide everyone in the supply chain with an opportunity for competitive advantage.
Staff involved in applied purchasing and supply research are currently working closely with the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) on projects focusing on developing SME purchasing strategies.
