even notice the rain, felt so proud and happy!!!" .....
Janet Benton one of the first graduates encouraging some of her colleagues
who haven't been quite as quick to finish as she has managed. Janet
also said (to us) "My
daughters are 10 and 16 and they were really amazed by the whole event.
Gave them some inspiration to do well at school - I hope?
Fantastic, well organised day. Thanks to
everyone for all your guidance and support in getting there! |
......."this
has created a number of opportunities and after interviews I have been lucky
enough to get promoted to "Senior Procurement Officer" responsible for all
procurement activities at the power station and now taking in a number of
other locations within the company.
I just wanted to pass on that having the mention of studying for the Masters
on my CV seemed to open doors that had in the past remained firmly closed,
and went down very well in the interview, so it seems that the course is
held in high regard by some (at least with our Procurement Director)."

Ms Ilze Grickus - wrote this welcome letter on behalf of CIPS to the first
group of students who started in April 02 (Janet's group)

Here are some comments from current and past students:
(A potential student asked us (MDC) if we could put them in
touch with someone who had recently finished the programme. This below is
the unedited reply that Janet Benton sent to him:
Hi Tony,
No problem about asking lots of questions after all it is your future you are
enquiring about. I did the same when I started my quest to achieve "Masters
status".
The course was 12 months long in total start to finish, started 21st April
2002 and completed 28th April 2003.
It is possible to complete in one year but only with total dedication and
commitment from yourself. By that I mean completing the assignments in time for
submission and to the best of your ability. And between 18 to 25 hours for 3 to
6 months when you are doing your dissertation.
The amount of hours you would spend on your projects of which we had 4 main
ones depends on yourself and how fast you work.
The qualification is absolutely a first class one, and is well recognised.
With regards to your lack of hands on experience, there were many people on
the course of the same age group, to be honest as long as you have good
literature you will be ok.
Weekend lectures excellent, first class, really tiring sometimes 10 hours a
day studying but much more worthwhile and beneficial than regular lessons over a
one year period, you get all your study material and lecturers in one go which I
preferred.
Grades are 40% plus for a pass quite achievable really.
I am not sure of the pass rate as I am the first to submit, Frances can tell
you about previous years.
Finally, YES I would more than recommend this course, it was an excellent
journey to achieve this degree.
Good luck I hope you decide to go with this course.
Jan Benton MCIPS
Buyer
"The course was a challenge that called for determination, discipline
and commitment to see it to the end. The modules were appropriate and practical
and related to strategic developments in procurement today. What I found useful
was having a clear vision of the dissertation from the start and how the vision
was going to be realised within the stipulated time. The course was not just
preparation to get a qualification, it has created an arena for cross
pollination of ideas and experiences through the network that has been
created." Heins Chuungwe Buyer, major components Bombardier
Aerospace - Short Brothers PLC
"The course was not the easiest studying I have ever done, but then that
was to be expected for a masters qualification. The two residential weekends
were extremely exhausting but were both good from an academic and social point
of view. The most difficult part of completing
the course was finding a balance between work, family and study, however, due to
the internet nature of the course the flexibility was excellent, and I even
surprised myself when I completed this dissertation at the earlier submission
date." Janet Benton,

Carole Dunleavy , Purchasing Manager - Non -
Production Contracts &
Consumables, Sony Manufacturing UK Ltd. Bridgend
To manage the negotiation and purchase of all goods and services to ensurethe
plant operates smoothly and efficiently whilst maximising best price and added
value.
To equip myself with the latest purchasing techniques and to broaden my view
of supply chain management.
A more confident approach to business, the MSc has changed the way in which I
think, it has "stretched" my thought processes. Networking, the
insight to other organisations and industry sectors was fascinating, and the
people interesting and enjoyable company
Demanding but enjoyable.
Kath Webb, Procurement Manager, Cray Valley Limited
Negotiation and contract responsibility for a specified portfolio of raw
materials, consumable and service contracts – for two sites in UK. Manage
vendor and supply chain development programme which includes
performance
levels, vendor appraisal and investigation into failures
Felt it was a natural progression after becoming MCIPS qualified. Wanted to
meet with like-minded professionals within an educational capacity
Many things.
1. Group worked very well as a team.
2. Course covered issues/concepts that I was not very familiar with, e.g.
e-commerce and logistics.
3, Able to "bounce" ideas off other professional buyers and
lecturers, thus obtaining views of people in different sectors to the one I
work.
4. Recognition at work
Considering it was the first time the MSc in Procurement was held at the
University the course was run well and the assistance from lecturers was very
positive.
Andre Roy, Purchasing & Supply Manager, Elizabeth Shaw
I am responsible for managing the total supply chain, working with suppliers
and customers to add value and to ultimately achieve total end customer
satisfaction.
I decided to follow the MSc Procurement programme at Glamorgan because of the
reputation of Michael Quayle and to achieve a post graduate qualification to
further enhance my career prospects and to stand out from my peer group.
I enjoyed the course which I found intellectually stimulating, at times
challenging but mostly good fun.
Duncan Lewis, Procurement and Logistics Manager, GPU Power UK
(electricity utility based in the Midlands)
The job covers managing a team of professional buyers and support staff,
responsible for a total purchase spend of around £140M, a central warehouse and
delivery service and finally a workshop for customising and refurbishing
engineering products.
I decided to do the course because, although I was very familiar with
materials management and production planning, my experience of modern
procurement was more limited particularly on strategic issues.
The course succeeded in this aim and got me thinking in new ways about old
problems e.g. outsourcing
Overall - "A number of areas covered by the course were a real challenge
and well worth some rainy evenings in Pontypridd"
Jeff Thompson, Buyer, A B Automotive Electronics Limited
Presently purchasing, electronics, consumables, and services for a
manufacturer of climate control equipment, and electronics, for the automotive
industry
I wanted to ensure I was fully aware of the leading-edge approaches in
purchasing and the management of material supply.
The MSc in Procurement provided an excellent academic background to the
subject without losing sight of the need for practical application.
An excellent course for individuals looking to increase their contribution to
an organisation
