Procurement strategy is the hot topic in the public sector

It has been pointed out to us by some of our students (customers !) that this website is heavily biased towards private industry and yet there are many powerful moves and initiatives within government the NHS and the public sector to improve the skills of procurement professionals.  Reproduced below is an email from one such student which puts the case much better than we can:

Hi Lindsay,

I'm shooting from hip here so my response is a bit rough and ready.

The first thing to say is that the MSc is targeted at middle to senior managers or at those who will be soon joining their ranks. So it would be useful if the Home office people came into that category.

Secondly, there is a consistent message from central government for government departments to build procurement capacity in order to be able to deliver strategic procurement objectives such as those enshrined in PFI and the Gershon Review.

Highly trained and skilled procurement staff command a premium and world class training is one of the best ways that the public sector has of retaining excellent staff at the same time as building capacity.

The Glamorgan course is probably the least disruptive procurement masters course in the UK (in terms of time away from the office) due to its use of IT. In addition it is extremely good value when one considers the exorbitant charges for 'one off' courses and seminars aimed at public sector procurement professionals.

Personally I can vouch for the fact that the extra reading I am required to do for this course is already having a positive impact on my own job and I've only been in the programme for 4 months.

Last but no means least, their business case should be tied in strongly with the procurement strategy of the Home Office and its wider strategic objectives, if the Home Office has IPP it should strengthen their case still further.

Regards.

Gary
